Was Johann Hayward broke? If anyone asked, the answer was an emphatic no. Objectively, Johann wasn’t broke. His prize money was decent, he drove a Porsche, and he owned a place in New York. His adoptive father, Dr. Hayward, had spared no expense, financial or otherwise, in helping him become a motorsport driver. He didn’t owe the bank anything, and no one in his family had ever landed him in trouble. So Johann didn’t have to worry about where his next meal was coming from, he wasn’t short on clothes, and he’d never had to wonder if he’d have a bed to sleep in. In short, he was nowhere near poor.
